Wash Your Fabrics! ![Dancing_Bee2[1]09 Dancing_Bee2[1]09](../assets/images/Dancing_Bee2_1_09.gif)
1- shrinking , 2- bleeding in the wash.
Check to see if your fabric is colorfast. Even if the bolt at the store says that it is colorfast, don’t trust it. A pretty red is not so pretty when it bleeds into you white fabric after all the quilting is done.
Keep changing the water until it remains clear. After four times of doing this, if the dye still comes out, you need to that other measure. Soak fabric in a very very hot tub of water with 2 cups of white vinegar in it for 30 minutes. Then try the colorfast test again, but this time add a small piece of white scrap fabric rinse a few times and test a few times. If the fabric still bleeds I would not use this fabric.
If one material shrinks and the others do not, then the quilt top will pucker whenever that fabric is used. Many people like this look because it give their quilt a antique look.
* Just a note I have noted many reds and blues are not colorfast and do bleed off into lighter fabric. So do check -- It will break your heart after all that work.
